Summer Days...

This weekend has been one of glorious summer weather, and it has been perfect. The weekend started off on Friday night in the best possible way - enjoying a picnic by the lake with some colleagues. I love how people really enjoy the good weather here - when it is a nice day, everybody goes outside! The lakeside on sunny days and warm evenings is packed with families and friends picnicking, barbecuing, children playing, people running, cycling, walking, skating or swimming in the lake! So naturally, we joined in the fun and spent a glorious few hours enjoying the gorgeous views and each others' company. We ended up playing a few rounds of charades, and then the laughter really began! Some of the favourite words from the night that needed to be acted out included Botswana, marshmellow, papaya, Rousseau, and considering we are a bunch of academics some statistical terms were thrown in the mix for good measure - item response theory and total survey error!

Saturday was spent shopping for gifts for friends and family back home (can't believe I am going to be home so soon!)  Shopping in Lausanne is a much more pleasant experience than shopping in shopping centers - the entire old town is a shopping area and full pedestrian-only zone so it is so pleasant to wander around the streets (which on a Saturday are a complete market) and browse all the cute shops! I found some great shops that I had not discovered before and had a very successful shopping day.

Today started off with a long run by the lake, followed by church... and then I decided to enjoy some more sunshine and lake views while I had some lunch, read, and mosied around the lake - it is always bustling with activity when the weather is good! And of course, no afternoon by the lake is complete with out some ice-cream... this time round the flavours of choice were pistachio and kiwi - Yum!

Dolce Vita

Dolce vita... sweet life... and indeed what a sweet life this is! This past weekend I visited Ticino, the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. It is quite unlike any place I have visited in Switzerland. The climate is quite tropical, the landscape different, and of course the culture is distinctly Italian! Ticino definitely has a "holiday destination" feel about it... and we had the most stunning weekend!

We stayed in the town of Giubasco - we didn't do anything here (except have one incredible meal - more on that later) - but it was well located for all our other trips. On the Friday night when we arrived, we went to Bellinzona and went to one of the three castles. As we wondering back through the town to find a spot for dinner, we stumbled across a free street party which we happily joined in! We then found a restaurant my colleague had recommended... and wow, it was the perfect spot to eat dinner! Just a few tables in the courtyard... seasonal food... (asparagus and prosciutto lasagne for me - delicious!), chilled rosé, great company and a warm summer night.

On Saturday, we headed back to Bellinzona to enjoy the market (this must be the best way to shop - so many wonderful things to choose from complete with the best atmosphere - people greeting each other in the street included!) and selected some fresh local produce for a picnic lunch - bread, cheese (wow, this was incredible), fresh cherry tomatoes, salami and cherries.

We then met up with some other friends and headed to the town of Lugano where we walked along the lake to the Funicular to take us up to the top of Mont San Salvador - a place with an incredible view of Ticino and the place where we enjoyed our perfect picnic lunch (I think people were quite jealous!). From there we headed to the lake, rented some peddle boats and ate gelato... what more could you want?

For dinner we ate at Grotto al Torcett - a typical italian-style outdoor restaurant hidden away from the tourists which we only knew about thanks to my colleague! Eating here was an experience I will not soon forget and I don't think the restaurant will forget it either! I am sure we were the staff's entertainment for the night! I had made a reservation online through mytable.com (a handy website - especially for making reservations in a foreign country!) so we were greeted by a typical italian appearing on the balcony saying "mio tavolo" (my table!) - at least we knew we had a table! Thankfully my colleague had given us dinner and drink recommendations so deciphering the menu was manageable - italian is similar to french too, so that helped! We had a typical drink - boccalino - wine mixed with gazosa (a regional lemonade) served in a boccalino (a ceramic mug typcial of this region) and ate all you can eat ribs cooked on the outdoor grill close to our tables. Wow.

Sunday brought more sunshine and more adventure! We went to Locarno and took the boat to isole di brissago - a little Island which is basically just one big botanical garden with flowers from all over the world (including South Africa). We spent a pleasant few hours enjoying the sunshine, flowers and beautiful views... and climbing a tree! Then we went to Ascona to eat lunch at a restaurant over looking the lake - this restaurant was another recommendation from a colleague - yum yum yum! Of course the afternoon was complete with some more exploring of the old town and more gelato... delicious! All in all, a perfect weekend!

I have seen yesterday and I love today

The start of June marks the beginning of my 6th month of living in Lausanne - I can't actually believe it. I have thought a lot about "time" recently and I find myself in an interesting position. Some days, it feels like it was  just yesterday when my sister and I arrived in Lausanne for the first time - a new city that I knew nothing about. And other days, I feel like my life in Switzerland is the only life I have ever known. This is partly a good thing because it shows me just how settled I really am and how much I love living here. But at the same time, I feel the need to be very conscious of all that has gone before, all those people and experiences that made me who I am today and all that happened to get me to today - living a rich and full life in Lausanne. I am grateful that I am growing in my ability to embrace all that has gone before and been a part of my journey - the good and the not so good.

So here are some things I have learnt in the last 5 months...
  • to enjoy my own company
  • that I should probably practice my map reading skills a bit more
  • to trust my instincts
  • that I adapt to change and uncertainty better than I thought I would
  • that waking up early = more productivity and energy
  • taking a lunch break is a good idea
  • that healthy eating and exercise makes me a better person, but that I also enjoy crêpes, pain au chocolat, gaufres, swiss chees, movenpick and ben & jerry's ice-cream....
  • living with a grateful heart brings happiness, joy and contentment
  • attitude matters
  • learning to manage my own money is satisfying
  • groceries are heavy
  • Switzerland looks like the post-cards
  • learning French is harder than I thought it would be... but I am getting there
  • when in doubt, take an umbrella
  • it is OK to ask for help
  • good coffee is worth the effort
  • Lausanne has a population of  127 821 and is small with an area of 41.38 km-  Compare this to Johannesburg 508.69 km2   and a population of approximately 3.5million...
  • I like tea made with fresh tea leaves
  • I like taking the train
  • I like being able to walk every day and be outside
  • That I appreciate friends and family at home more than ever before...
